Since its introduction in 1965, Moore’s Law has accurately predicted a steady increase in computing power, with computer performance per unit cost doubling approximately every 24 months since the 1960s. The ever increasing speed of computer processors and the expanding storage capacity of computer hard drives has permitted the use of increasingly powerful algorithms in computational biology. High-speed personal computers have also permitted the development of increasingly powerful scientific instruments such as high-resolution microarray scanners and high-throughput microarrayers. Computers provide essential cornerstones for the microarray, diagnostics and life sciences fields.

High-volume computer companies provide solid performance at reasonable prices, but the cost constraints of the modern computer industry make it virtually impossible for these companies to offer the latest technology and best performance specifications at reasonable price points.
